About Our Fabrics

Embroidered Silk

Our silk is woven and embroidered in southern India using high quality natural silk. Raw silk fabric has a crisp, firm texture with a natural lustre and a distinctive sheen. It also features small natural slubs which give it is character and natural look.

The embroidery is designed in house at Shibumi and then stitched into the raw silk colours that Ruth has picked for her collections.

Embroidered Silk is a beautiful statement fabric of richness and impactful style displaying beautiful floral patterns which give a slight 3d effect due to the stitching. A perfect fabric for when you want something extra special, beautiful and stylish and long lasting.

Raw Silk

Dupion silk is a plain weave of silk that is produced using fine thread in the warp and a rough uneven thread in the weft. Notably, this uneven thread is sourced from two or more entangled cocoons. This mix creates a tightly woven fabric and a lustrous surface which makes the dupion silk look striking.

We choose our colours in house and then the raw fabric is dyed for our collections. We dye in small batches so that there is no wastage. The dying process takes time as the fabric is dyed and then hung to dry. It can take 3 months to produce one fabric but the wait is worth it.

The fabric is a perfect choice for coats, jackets and dresses as it holds its shape well and is quite strong due to its dual thread nature. The way the fabric holds the colour is sensational soaking up the pigments. It is one of the most luxurious fabrics available, hardly creases, easily ironed and best of all, environmentally friendly.

Cashmere/Silk Blend

Our cashmere silk blend is versatile, beautiful and very wearable. With a blend of 70% cashmere 30% Silk this fabric is a perfect choice if you want to wear something dressed up for a special occasion but also be able to wear it in a more casual way with relaxed trousers or jeans. Blending these two in different ratios can give you the best of both. Silk will add durability and drape to a finished project, while the cashmere will add warmth and a bit of flexibility.

The fall of the fabric is softer than the raw silk due to its cashmere content. Although it is cashmere it is still light and soft, so that you keep on your frock coats and jackets styling them as dress jackets not needing to take them off whilst sitting down for dinner!
